Theme: New Transportation Technologies - Opportunities to Enhance Safety, Mobility, and Public Health

       This conference is organized and run by students sponsored by the USDOT Center for Connected & Automated Transportation (CCAT) at Purdue, and other partners. Students everywhere are invited to attend and present their work at the conference.

       Presentations may cover ongoing or completed work in various research areas and research activities. The goal is to promote networking opportunities, awareness of current research, exchange of novel ideas and professional experiences, and discussion of case studies and research applications.

"Testing Autonomous Vehicles in a Naturalistic and Adversarial Environment"

Professor Henry Liu is a professor in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor. He is also a Research Professor at the University of Michigan Transportation Research Institute and the Director for the Center for Connected and Automated Transportation (USDOT Region 5 University Transportation Center). Prof. Liu conducts interdisciplinary research at the interface between civil and mechanical engineering. Specifically, his scholarly interests concern traffic flow monitoring, modeling, and control, as well as testing and evaluation of connected and automated vehicles. He has published more than 100 refereed journal papers and is listed as one of the top 50 leading authors in the past 50 years (1969-2019) in the prestigious Transportation Research journal. Professor Liu and his work have been widely recognized in public media for promoting smart transportation innovations. He has appeared on media outlets including CNBC, Forbes, Technode, etc. In 2019, Professor Liu was invited to testify on national transportation research agenda in front of the US House Subcommittee on Research and Technology. Professor Liu has nurtured a new generation of scholars, and some of his PhD students and postdocs have joined first class universities such as Columbia University, Purdue University, RPI, etc. Prof. Liu is the managing editor of Journal of Intelligent Transportation Systems and an associate editor of Transportation Research Part C.

"Blockchain Technology and Autonomous Transportation Systems"

Dr. Nii O. Attoh-Okine, is a Professor of Civil and Environmental Engineering, and Electrical and Computer Engineering at the University of Delaware. He is also the Interim Academic Director University of Delaware Cybersecurity Initiative. In the mid-1990S, Dr. Attoh-Okine pioneered the application of neural networks, graphical probability models, and other Artificial Intelligence techniques in infrastructure engineering and management. Dr. Attoh-Okine has published extensively in cross-disciplinary areas. Recently his work on Empirical Model decomposition – signal processing technique was recognized as one of the ground-breaking innovations in Civil Engineering. He is a founding associate editor for ASCE/ASME Journal of Risk and Uncertainty Analysis. He is also Associate Editor of several ASCE Journals, and Advances in Data Science and Adaptive Data Analysis. He has also served on IEEE Transactions on Systems, Man and Cybernetics, and Special Issues Editor for various IEEE Journals.  Dr. Attoh-Okine is currently a member of a group of researchers from the United States and Japan working on Smart Cities and various cyber issues related to the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games.

"Unraveling the Impacts of Shared Electric Automated Vehicles on Urban Mobility"

Dr. Gonçalo Correia is an Associate Professor at the Department of Transport & Planning at the Faculty of Civil Engineering and Geosciences at the Delft University of Technology, the Netherlands, and co-director of the hEAT lab (research on electric and automated transport) at TU Delft. His research areas include the planning and operations of sustainable urban transport systems, Transport Demand Management strategies, and the application of innovative technologies including ridesharing, carsharing and automated vehicles, for urban congestion mitigation. He is the editor-in-chief of the Journal of Advanced Transportation, associate editor of the IEEE Intelligent Transportation Systems Magazine, and editorial board member of journals including Transportation Research Part E: Logistics and Transportation Reviews, and Transportation Research Part C: Emerging Technologies.

"Mobility Enterprise Project at Purdue: An Early Experiment in Shared Mobility"

Dr. Kumares C. Sinha, is the Edgar B. and Hedwig M. Olson Distinguished Professor of Civil Engineering, Purdue University. He is a former director of the Joint Transportation Research Program of Purdue University and Indiana DOT. He has served in leadership roles in many professional societies including ASCE, TRB, IRF, ARTBA, and CUTC. He has been a PI or co-PI of research projects funded by agencies including USDOT, National Academies, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, and NSF. Dr. Sinha’s work has been influential in the practice, and he has been a consultant for many organizations including the World Bank. He served on several federal advisory panels such as the Executive Committee of the Bureau of Transportation Statistics, the Blue Ribbon Panel of Experts for the US National Surface Transportation Policy and Revenue Study Commission, and the Oversight Committee of the Strategic Highway Program. Dr. Sinha is a Member of the National Academy of Engineering.
